Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez
This story was going really well right up until a little glitch at the end. What on earth was going on with the implication the Dr Urbino was having another affair???? Are we supposed to forget that he fell out of the mango tree, and instead ran off with another woman only to be killed again?? Or was it just a nasty, false story put out by the local tabloids? I don't get it, and if anyone can explain what the point of it was I'd appreciate an answer. (Maybe it was supposed to help us feel less sympathy for the Dr so Florentino appears less like a triumphant stalker and more like a gallant consoler? If so, it didn't work for me.) Apart from that, if you can put aside the fact that Florentino is somewhat repellent, I thought the story was kind of sweet (at least the finding of love at the end of life) and the ending was a fitting way to finish the story. I think there were only two ways it could end and I'm glad that my predicted tragedy didn't occur.
