Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue: The Untold History of English by John McWhorter
4.0
Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue is a series of entertaining linguistics hot takes written for the kind of person who's new to linguistics but also needs to be ready to debate these points with a linguistics professor. That is to say that while the book is quite accessible and engaging overall, McWhorter spends a lot of time backing up each of his arguments with references to the works of other linguistics and anthropological theorists and historians, and many examples. Personally I was hoping for a few more fun facts about the quirks of the English language and a little less inside baseball academic content.
