Review after Reread in 2022

"But an echo is not the same as a now, (...) Also, the problem is, when you think you've been without monsters for so long, sometimes you forget what they look like, what they sound like, no matter how much remembering your education urges you to do. It's not the same when the monsters are gone."

I think I need to remind myself to breathe. The first time I read this I was so shocked by the way this book played out, the horrible, disgusting topics it discusses while keeping a playful tone. And rereading it now shows me just how good this book is. Not only is the writing-style addicting and beautiful, but the heavy topics are handled respectfully, without graphic shock value to disturb the reader.
Pet shows that "torture-porn" isn't necessary to show light on topics such as child abuse. Don't get me wrong, it's not lighthearted or played down into sizable chunks so that everyone can look away, give a good rating and move on, but it's still not too much that it would make me give a rating and move on too not think too much about it.

Emezi created an amazingly simple world that is explained enough without being overbearing, there's only so much world-building you can do on 200 pages, still, every character is fleshed out. Yes, I mixed up Redemption's and Jam's parents multiple times, but it doesn't really matter for the plot, because if the character is on scene you still understand what's going on.

I'm in awe at this book. 5/5. I'll leave you with another quote I wrote down while reading:

"Where there levels of monsters? Were some worse than others? Was that even the kind of thing you could measure?Do not measure, Pet said in her head. A monster is a monster."
