Zero Fail: The Rise and Fall of the Secret Service by Carol Leonnig

5.0

Super gripping and SO ALARMING, "Zero Fail" brings to light the reality that the U.S. is so close at any moment to total catastrophe. I've never thought too deeply about the mechanics of the Secret Service—like basically everyone, I just assumed that they were super good and effective because their whole existence necessitates them being good and effective. I was wrong, and we're all wrong, and it's kind of amazing more disastrous things haven't happened to our leaders. Because the Secret Service's job HAS to get done, it's really easy for their comfort and needs to be basically ignored. They're going to do their job regardless of comfort, so why should we pump more funding into them? Carol Leonnig tells us why—because outdated equipment and training, coupled with overworked and underappreciated staff, PUTS THE U.S. AT RISK. It's really scary to think about, yet extremely clear that these dedicated service members deserve much more than they've gotten.

Five stars for this eye-opening picture of America's political and policy failures, and one star for the administrations of all leanings that have let the situation fester.
