Yellowface by R.F. Kuang
4.0
A surprising genre departure for R. F. Kuang, who has drawn me in with her brilliance and brutality in previous works. However, while the stakes of this story are much lower, she still writes with the same level of distress and urgency, which I found particularly enjoyable and effective.
Not since Curtis Sittenfeld’s “Prep” have I been so captivated by such an unlikeable protagonist. I found myself simultaneously rooting for her and wanting her to fail.
A fun read, and while not as groundbreaking as Babel or The Poppy War, still an excellent piece of thought-provoking fiction.
