Paradise by Toni Morrison
5.0
There's not much I can say about Toni Morrison that hasn't (I'm sure) been said before. 'Genius' about sums it up for me. Reading her books is not really like reading, it's like being invited into another world and you're either in or you're out, she's not going to water it down for you or take you through it step by step. You have to keep delving further and further until the meanings, the secrets, the truths are revealed - or not!! This book was about an isolated, all-black town that had been created by a group of men who wanted a 'Paradise' away from white people. A group of drifter women have set up a kind of commune on the outskirts of town and the book opens with the men of the town arriving at the house to slaughter those women. Morrison then takes us through the story of each woman, while also explaining the (very complex!) history of the town and the families who founded it. Just amazing stuff altogether, wanted to read it again immediately!!
