A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth

1.0

I don't know what to write about this book. I want to think that this is another case of my depression ruining a book, but I'm afraid that's not the case, unfortunately. This book was a big mess. Both in the way it was told, the grammar - there were some pretty amazing mix ups with time in there - as well as world building. There were a lot lot of British/Celtic folklore-based terms thrown around in there - Seele, un-seele, The Wild Hunt - which would have been fine! But then came the revelation that these terms covered the Fae Folk - and other mythological creatures besides - from across the entire world! That's some major white washing right there, and I'm honestly surprised no one else seem to react to this. Then again, the girl on the cover is white - but she's supposed to actually be a Greek Death Goddess - wielding a katana, so I don't know what I expected...

And the book was too long, I think. They could easily have dropped Hiro's scenes in favor of focusing more on the other characters, and maybe even doing a bit more of action building around them, instead of a lot of it happening off-screen. Which is very ironic coming from me, because I believe that too many books don't let the world live enough on its own!

All in all, the only thing I actually liked about this book was the former Fury and her depression, and how the author portrayed it.
