For the first bit of this book, it was harder for me to really get involved with it, but as I neared the end, the twists and turns definitely began to enrapture me. I started a notes list on my phone of all the different motivations that people or creatures could have and what some of the mysteries were and how they tie together because damn is this book confusing! It was definitely enjoyable though I didn't love it at first. It's crazy to compare this book to the first where
magic isn't even involved in the first and our only understanding of orogeny is with the earth and... stuff (I can't even begin to describe it still). I love seeing that transition and I really have no idea how to describe this book to others. I really loved Nassun's journey and it's so sad. It really alters your perspective on Essun as you don't realize how she treated her daughter because we only see her talk about how she needs to find her in the first book.  R.I.P. Alabaster I love that man.

I love seeing how identity plays out in this book and how Hoa describes Essun as being a compilation of all these different people and identities which is a cool visualization of how other people impact us. Identity also plays out a lot when it comes to describing people as monoliths, whether that be the stills, orogenes, or stoneaters. I love the characterization in this book and Jemisin beautifully shows us how these people's experiences shape their viewpoints on others. Really awesome.
