Compass and blade by Rachel Greenlaw

5.0

Reread: February 2025

Did I just fly through this for the second time in a matter of days? Why yes, yes I did. My review from my first read still stands. It’s definitely a bit of a slow start and feels slightly like two separate stories but I had a fantastic time and am very excited to get to the sequel.

First Read: March 2024

Format: Print

I flew through this book, I was absolutely HOOKED and very annoyed that sleep meant I couldn’t just read it in one sitting.

I agree that it is very YA and trope heavy – it’s a bit predictable, there’s instalove, the main character feels ‘different’ to everyone else and has a ‘calling’ etc. etc, but honestly, I didn’t care. I had a good time.

This does feel a bit like a book of two halves, but it was refreshing to see those two halves in a single book. I thought it was the perfect length for what it is. It was simple, easy to follow and engaging and I didn’t need anything else. Except for book two. I need that right now to find out what happens next.

Oh, and I’m definitely not looking up other similar books set at sea/pirate-y reads ready for a book shopping trip…
