A Conspiracy of Stars by Olivia A. Cole
4.0
A Conspiracy of Stars by Olivia A. Cole follows Octavia, a 16 year old girl studying to be a scientist like most of the other people on the planet Faloiv. All Octavia has ever wanted was to follow in her parents footsteps, to become a whitecoat and study the animals native to the planet. But something goes weird when she sees her first specimen within the confines of one of the domes. Octavia has a strange connection with the animal and then faints. And this is just the beginning. Other odd things happen when the scientists decide they will allow interns from the Greenhouse where Octavia is studying, and she is one of them. On top of the unexplained encounters Octavia has with the animals, there is tension building within the community. What are the higher ups hiding, and what will it mean for their future?
There isn't many things I can say to knock this story down. It had great characters, a cool setting, and the ending was fast paced and intriguing. The only reason it wasn't quite a 5 star was because it was kind of slow paced in the beginning, and I had already guessed the ending. The fact that Octavia's grandmother kept coming up as well was a bit too repetitive, and became the reason I guessed the ending.
Octavia was a refreshing character, as a lot of the time when a character notices that they are different in some substantial way, they keep it to themselves. Octavia did the opposite and confided in two of her friends, and then two more once it became necessary. Her relationship with Alma was heartfelt and her relationship with Rondo was totally believable. I also thought her relationship with her parents was interesting, since she didn't really trust either of them even though her mom kept making illusions to knowing that she was different. I also really enjoyed the idea of the story. I personally haven't read many books where it is actually science based, so it was fun to see the perspective of animal study.
I am excited to see where An Anatomy of Beasts takes the story, since it left on such a cliffhanger not knowing where most of the characters ended up.
