Dune by Frank Herbert
4.0
Dune is a world of deserts, populated by an exotic tribe with blue eyes. I like the setup - it's like a sci-fi version of my fav Paul Bowles' novels on Morocco. Plus visions induced by hallucinogens - nicely described borderline states, but not that illuminating, being experienced by someone else.
Here my interest, practically, ends. The story is gripping, yes, but the characters make it way too sugary and predictable. They are so straighforward that seem to come out of a Hollywood flick with a superhero in it, than out of a carefully-constructed universe. One-dimansional paper dolls moving on a richer backround, unfortunately.
I've started reading the first volume for the sake of the Lynch's Dune movie. Would I read the second one? Yes, just for the sake of the desert.
