One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
5.0
What an absolutely fantastic story! I devoured this book in two days and could have easily consumed it in one, was I not at work.
Gillig has create a unique and original idea that I always crave in fantasy. Our main character is likable, familiar, and relatable! In fact, the entire cast was well developed. I haven't read anything this immersive since Godkiller and the Four Pillars series.
The magic system revolves around a deck of cards. Which I found to be genius. Elspeth's banter with Rayven had me laughing out loud. And even her relationship with Elm was enjoyable.
My favorite character, if you haven't guessed already, was The Nightmare. He is full of mystery, darkness, he is funny, and eerie at times. The relationship he has with Elspeth is surprisingly heartwarming.
I loved every aspect of this book and am sore that I waited to long to read it.
And that ending!! I cannot wait to get my hands on the second novel!
