Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May
4.0
A loose retelling of The Great Gatsby but with queer witches? Sold!
Set in the 1920s, this decadent historical fantasy tells the tale of Annie, a young woman who travels to Crow Island to reconcile with her best friend, Bea, and settle her father's estate after he passes. But Crow Island is seething with darkness and illegal magic. There, Annie meets the enigmatic figure, Emmeline, who is shrouded by gossip and rumours of dark witchcraft.
I adored the gothic setting of this novel! Crow Island is mysterious and alluring, as is Emmeline’s manor.
Bea was, at times, such a frustrating character but I loved Emmeline and Annie’s relationship! The vinculum plot line was so interesting, although I was left with some questions about how it came to be.
I also loved the witchcraft and learning about Emmeline’s dark history with Cilla. Emmeline was just such a well-constructed character.
I did not know how the story was going to end and while it was heartbreaking, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The only reason it’s not 5 stars is because at times, I found the storyline a bit repetitive. But otherwise, an enjoyable, bewitching novel!
