Well.. this is just a mess.

The plot is weak, and the characters and story constantly contradict itself. The past trauma of both Max & Luca's characters is revealed too easily and frankly used in a way that felt like it was there for being theirs sake and not to actually add any true depth or feeling to the story or the characters themselves.

This had potential to be an impactful and heartfelt story about two men working through past trauma and current obstacles to eventually reach a happy ending but the attempt at executing such a delicate story given the content the author chose to include wasn't good. The flippant way these characters past trauma is spoken about in the minimal amount of the book I managed to push through was frankly gross.

It's like the author had NO IDEA who the characters were she was trying to write so chucked a bunch of contradictory traits into a hat and just kept on pulling them out and adding them as she went along. And the way an intimate scene between them was described as being/feeling "taboo" to one of the characters was just weird...queer relationships/desires/sex and intimacy isn't "taboo", i don't know... just the way it was presented came across with homophobic undertones to me, and considering this is meant to be a love story between two men, that shouldn't have been the impression i was getting.

This was my first book by this author and usually when trying a new to me author if I don't gel with the first book I always at least try one more incase it just wasn't the right book of theirs for me to start with, but this has left such a bitter taste in my mouth that rule won't be applying here.
