The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

3.0

I may have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t listened to it. There was a lot of stuff where I wasn’t sure if she was inner monologuing or actually speaking out loud and some of it would make a pretty significant difference. Particularly during these moments where Josh got angry and she felt scared, physically hid from him (?) just rubbed me the wrong way. And they were never really explained away. His ex-girlfriend even mentioned that she was scared when he got like that. He’s constantly talked about as being this huge tall muscley guy. Would’ve liked to see him understand what that means in a social context, especially when our main character is five-foot-nothing. The elevator scene, for that reason, was REALLY uncomfortable. Like, she basically had a panic attack thinking he was going to hurt her? But again, not sure how much of that she actually expressed to him and therefore how much he should’ve known to back off.

The banter was fun, though, and overall it was written well. Except…sorry. Three things stuck out. (1) She constantly felt her nipples pinching? I don’t even know what to do with that one. (2) He smelled like pine and other good shit after going to the gym?? That’s very good deodorant sir. (3) There’s a part where she says she scuttles sideways out of his room and into the living room “like a crab” and the mental image of that was hysterical and I don’t think it was supposed to be.
