Set in a fictional world, but it feels like Ireland in perhaps the 1800s? For many years the O'Malley's have prospered after a deal struck with the mer-folk, in exchange for a child of each generation. For a long time, this bargain hasn't been kept by the O'Malley's, but now Mirin's Grandmother is determined to reinstate it regardless of the cost.
This book was filled with magic and witches, mythical creatures of the seas and some rather dark family secrets. Mirin refuses to follow her Grandmother's wishes and flees to find her (long lost) mother, encountering many a creature and person along the way.
The whole story felt full of magic and mystery, and I particularly loved the inclusion of family stories and fairytales throughout. I loved Mirin's character and enjoyed following her find herself along the way, and find her power and strength too.
