Focusing by Eugene T. Gendlin

informative inspiring reflective

5.0

In the early 1990s I attended a workshop on Focusing. This was basically a presentation based on Campbell and McMahon's Bio-Spirituality. The process was the same as I read in Gendlin's Focusing. I volunteered to have the instructor run me through a session for the group. It was amazing! I used the process a few times soon after and very little since then. Recently I ran across mention of it again and decided to read Gendlin's book.

I have seen many low ratings for the book here on the site. From what they say, I think that they have not understood what Gendlin means by felt sense which is not the same as feelings or emotions. I think most everyone has experienced a felt sense, but it can be difficult to get across what it is. That is the key to understanding this book and in practicing. I think the book does explain it well, but it might be because I had the experience of the workshop to know what it is. It truly did take only a minute to know it when I went inside and waited. This process really is quite simple and effective in more than just personal growth. I'm so glad I found the book to remind me and further my understanding of the value of Focusing.
