Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson
4.0
Admittedly, this book started on the back foot - I have been a little tired of the Cosmere recently, and Hoid has always been the Cosmere's most tiresome element, so a Cosmere story told by Hoid faced an uphill battle. Sanderson is, though, as always, excellent at portraying a main character who I genuinely like leading and pulling together an ensemble of well-delimeated supporting characters for a tale which is just good, plain fun. Sanderson stumbles with the Pratchett-esque humour at points, and the same themes have cropped up once again (nothing in the Cosmere is as powerful as capitalism, and nothing is as virtuous as a good head for running a small businnes), but it is not enough to detract too much from a well-told story.
