The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

4.5

The Hero Of Ages is the epic conclusion to Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Era 1 series, a small part of the overall massive Cosmere.

The Final Empire has been one of my favorite modern fantasy books to date. While The Well Of Ascension was a slow burning, world-building affair, The Hero Of Ages is a BIG book. Fight scenes, which were once allomancer-on-allomancer duels, are now massive wartime set pieces. The fate of the world is at hand, and The Hero Of Ages offers some of the most cinematic moments in recent literary history.

Pacing feels a little off at times, and main characters Vin and Elend Venture often take backseat to prominent supporting characters such as Sazed, Spook, and TenSoon. Perhaps this is due to the sheer magnitude of the book itself; there is not enough time to emphasize the actions of just one or two characters alone.

If you are a fan of Sanderson's writing style, you will enjoy this book; Hero Of Ages is strongly evocative of his work on The Wheel Of Time.... which is encouraging, considering Mistborn was released one year prior prior to Sanderson's tenure on Robert Jordan's long running series.

Most importantly, Sanderson's satisfactory ending of the book series should not be overlooked; while a few thought-provoking questions remain, a truly enjoyable ending competently concludes The Mistborn Era 1 saga.
