The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
dark
funny
mysterious
medium-paced
4.5
This was a dark and interesting read to start off the spooky season with.
Jackson has a way of describing characters that is vivid and realistic that makes each of them come alive with the narrative. The humor and wit by the characters as they spoke to one another was absolutely unmatched.
Eleanor was a difficult MC to follow in the way that I found her relatable to an uncomfortable degree from her imagination, dreaming, to her perpetual social anxiety and believing those around her are gaslighting her constantly.
I found the ending to be anti climatic, however, and left more questions about the true nature of Hill House and the actual mental state of Eleanor than I came into the story with.
