A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
5.0
4.5 stars
I'm delighted to say that this book did not let me down. It really reads like the memoir of an accomplished female naturalist from history. I adore Lady Trent's narration as she is a confident expert telling of before she had that confidence, when no one was an expert in dragons (btw a fantasy that reads like a historical memoir is amazing and something I've never seen before).
The story is pretty simple as it sets the stage for the series and spends quite a good bit on Lady Trent's early life and budding interest in biology. This id in no way boring, it's my favourite part of the novel. I also love her husband and that we get to see how in love they are but without too much time spent on romantic waffle.
The one thing I dislike happened at the end and is something I despise in all novels. It's not handled too poorly so it didn't ruin the book or dampen my enthusiasm for the next one but I'm worried it won't be handled well from now on.
