The Innocents by Michael Crummey

1.5

Canada Reads Longlist. Dreary CanLit bingo: Remote location, struggles against nature, lots of snow and codfish, incest, sexual assault, way too much pregnancy/childbirth, graphic animal harm, everything's a metaphor, and someone's sexually aroused by a bear. I'm being glib, but honestly I thought we as a nation had moved past this genre about twenty years ago. I kept thinking I should just ditch the book, but for reasons unknown trudged through to the end. I have regrets.
