Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant

dark tense

3.5

Rolling in the Deep is essentially a critique of the way the media constructs narratives, and I was here for it. Honestly, this book might make me more skeptical of documentaries in future.

Despite the story going with the "secret creatures in the Mariana Trench" theory, I loved the depiction of the mermaids. We specifically learn about their appearance and methods of communication.

While this book is classified as horror – and it definitely has some horrifying moments, including an
ending out of a Piranha movie
– the atmosphere felt more eerie than scary and the real horrors only happen in the last quarter of the book.
