I can see why this book came so highly recommended. I loved the world-building, the characters, the chosen one with a twist trope, found family and the magic system especially.

One major issue I had with this was the pacing. I had to reread the first page like three times because I couldn’t really understand where we were starting. I thought the first chapter was a really odd way to open the book. It made more sense as the book went along but it was just strange that I was confused by the first page. I almost softly dnfed this. Then also it would go really fast in parts with alot of action and then slow way way way down in between to the point where I was like are we going to get to the action at some point 🤣 The ending felt completely rushed even though there was a really good twist right before the ending that I did not see coming.

Overall, a really good book that just suffered from bad pacing. I also don’t feel invested enough in the characters to continue to the next book. I think this would have been fine as a standalone novel.
