This very short story by Margaret Atwood is part of the Amazon Original Stories, and was my first time reading one of her works.
The Story 📚
Set in 1950s America, we follow the story of a young girl who lives with her mother. The mother believes that she is a witch, and protects her daughter with her powers throughout the various stages of her daughter’s life.
The Review 👩🏻💻
I will start by saying, the timespan this book covers despite its number of pages was impressive. We really got a sense of the girl over the years. It closely examines the relationship between mother and daughter - and how the parenting you experience will alter your own parenting style when you have children. I was at times confused by the extent of the witch story line, and the mother’s belief she was one. Was it actually a world where witches exist, a metaphor for mental illness or something else - who knows. 🧙♀️
Did I love it? No. But I didn’t hate it either. Quite simplistic and a nice, short read. I’m definitely enjoying short stories lately.
