The Good Guy by Susan Beale

4.0

This is the perfect book for fans of Mad Men who are craving another episode of the show.

The book centers around Ted (a pseudo Pete Campbell) a disillusioned tyre salesman, adulterer and self-confessed 'good guy'. Why is he a good guy? Because he has been faithful to his high school sweetheart for so long he deserves to have an affair. His colleagues have them, why can't he?

I know - what a douche, right? You're probably thinking why on earth this book would appeal to you? Luckily, his point of view is counteracted with that of his wife Abigail and his mistress Penny. Abigail feels like a failure, unable to fit into cookie-cutter New England suburbia as a housewife and mother. She would much rather be studying and finishing her college degree. I enjoyed her story the most. Penny is also an engaging character and you can't help but feel sorry for her as Ted spins his lies.

Susan Beale doesn't judge her characters and allows you to decide for yourself how you feel about them (just as Matt Weiner does on Mad Men). I really enjoyed this book, the setting, the characters (however flawed) and the exploration of 1950s-60s suburbia just before the sexual revolution would change everything.

Highly recommend for 2016. Book release in June.
