Small Bodies of Water by Nina Mingya Powles

5.0

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of essays, which all touch on three of my favourite topics - identity, language and the solace of water. The essays aren’t deep dives, but more meandering thoughts and various moments and experiences in Powles’ life, all linked to those three central themes - this broadness makes it difficult to choose favourites. Powles’ writing is a pleasure to read, and I immediately identified with so many elements of of her essays, particularly her love of water and the calming effect of being in or around it, the experience of attending international schools and the slippery nature of identity and home when you have a multicultural background and/or have lived in different countries. My one minor quibble is that since I don’t have great pop culture knowledge, particularly with Disney films, a number of references (especially to Mulan) largely went over my head, which is more of a general me problem rather than a criticism. If you find joy in being around water, have any kind of multicultural background or have an interest in our personal relationships to the languages we speak (or can’t speak), there will be something for you in this wonderfully-written collection.
