The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

Okay, this book surprised me in so many different ways and I LOVED it! I've heard this book was really popular back when it came out but I had never heard about it until I stumbled upon it at my library, and dang I'm so glad I did. I don't think I've heard anyone talk about this book lately and I feel like it's so underrated.
I will start off by saying that this book is slow in many aspects. I would say it's a little more character driven and all about the politics and the political intrigue. So if that's something that you hate in books, this one probably isn't for you.
I loved a lot of things about this book but what I probably loved the most were the characters. More specifically our main character, Elisa. She was one of the most refreshingly realistic heroine's that I've read in a long time and such an unlikely one as well, which made it even better. I was living for her character development throughout this book! She's also described as a heavier person, which again is very rare in YA, especially fantasy. Despite her flaws and the doubts of other people, as the story progressed she just gained more and more confidence and more power and it was amazing to read. I absolutely love her!
Another thing that I loved was the world and world building of this novel. I wouldn't say there's anything that necessarily stands out in the world or is particularly unique (which may sound bad but in this instance it's not), but it was so solid and real and extremely well done in my opinion. It was again a very refreshing and different setting from most YA novels I've been reading and I loved the Spanish influence in the names of the places and characters. Another aspect of good world building are celebrations and religions that the world as and this definitely had well established ones that made the world building even better.
I'm so happy that I found this series, and I cannot wait to dive into the next books! The Goodreads ratings are higher on the next novels which makes me excited that they might be even better than book one. If you have not read this series, or heard of it I definitely recommend picking it up!
