There's something about this author's books, they're too addictive. Once I start I must keep going, and I'm glad I ended up liking this one.
The plot is simple, Oliver is a slave who is bought by a master at 18 years old. As expected, this man turns out violent and uses him as punching back, while abusing him continously since slavery is still legal in this universe. Things change when the man's son arrives, Ben, and he becomes infactuated with Oliver.
I think what surprised me the most about the book is how it is aware of the power imbalance between the couple, and that it's hard to tell between the lines of gratitude and love coming from Oliver's position. I liked that Ben accepted that and assured Oliver it'll be alright if. It's not a perfect HEA for me under such circumstances, but I prefer it that way: the idea of living in the present.
Lastly, I wanted to mention that even as someone who isn't into instalove/instalust, which is close to what Ben felt when he first saw Oliver and viceversa, this author does her magic and keeps the whole thing somewhat believable. I believe the whole thing about Ben's father was rushed and solved conveniently, but I still had a great time, hence the 4 stars. I'll be reading the rest of the series soon!
