New Spring by Robert Jordan
2.0
"The Tower taught its students to live with what they could not change, too. But some things were important enough to try even if you were sure to fail."
------------
I was excited for this to be a super awesome origin story of Lan and Moiraine, but it fell completely flat for me. Jordan's weird obsession with women's bodies and older women as sexual predators that are accepted in society was gross for me. Both are completely unnecessary to the plot. Also, his obsession with how women look in various clothing, especially noting their breasts continually is like... why. Why is Moiraine, a straight woman(in the books), noticing the sensual nature of every woman's breasts as she encounters them?? Make it make sense.
I think there was potential to create some really exciting and dynamic encounters between Lan and Moiraine, and also to bring in the scene of Lan's birth & Tam bringing him home/meeting baby Perrin and Mat and how that was explained. Also the POV of Rand's biological mother would have been excellent. Instead, we got weird sexual predators, Moiraine abusing her power to abuse Lan, mentions of characters from the main series just to drop Easter Eggs, and at least 50 pages of useless scene descriptions.
This could have been a really epic addition to the series and to our understanding of some central characters, but it was squandered by all the nonsense. I guess that encapsulates my feelings about the entire series, now that I'm actually finished. Sad for the lost potential, meh for the execution.
