Do you ever just read a book and are so confused by it, but you also loved so much of it? Because that’s where I am with this book. I loved this book and I gave it 5 stars and it is one of my top books for 2020.
I am honestly not sure how to review this book without giving something away so if you don’t want to possibly be spoiled please go and read it and then come back to this review later.
Mexican Gothic tells the haunting tale of Noemi going to visit her newly married cousin Catalina who wrote a strange letter to Noemi’s father that has him worried for her safety. Noemi’s father doesn’t really care for Catalina’s husband as he is older and they didn’t get a chance to know him before the two got married. Once at Catalina’s in-law’s home, weird things start happening and there are a ton of rules to follow that don’t make a lot of sense. No one can use electricity, only coldish water can be used and there is no music whatsoever in the house.
Add on to all these weird rules Catalina is saying things like this to Noemi
“The walls speak to me. They tell me secrets. Don’t listen to them, press your hands against your ears, Noemí. There are ghosts. They’re real. You’ll see them eventually”. At this point, I was getting major ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ vibes from the story and I had no idea where it was going to go from here and it did not disappoint. From that point on things got stranger and stranger as Noemi got to know her cousin’s in-laws and learn about the house.
The one person who helps Noemi throughout all of this is Francis who is the quiet younger brother of Catalina’s husband. Noemi and Francis become friends and was the saving grace to Noemi’s sanity in this house.
Overall I loved this book so much even though it was rather confusing at times especially towards the end (I think I’m going to have to do a reread to understand it fully). Noemi figuring out what was going on in this house and the family’s backstory was just a lot to take in, but was also done so well and had me reading late into the night to figure out what happened next. I could not get enough and Noemi and Francis are two characters that while being extremely different were both loveable and I wanted the best for both of them. Catalina was a badass for figuring out as much as she did on her own and staying with it enough to help Noemi the little bit that she did. So much of this story just left me blown-away and I cannot wait to read more by Morena-Garcia in the future because they write such a good story.
If this book does get made into a movie/show I cannot wait to see how they make everything come to life.
What did you think of this book? I need to talk to someone in depth about this book because I have questions that I would like to find answers to.
