Come Closer by Sara Gran

5.0

Really great Horror story. I thought it was well done the main character we really get into her head and the ending was great. I had no idea this book was over 20 years old, but had been wanting to read this for four years for a Halloween bingo group I used to participate in. Definitely glad I grabbed this and finished.

"Come Closer" follows happily married Amanda. Amanda is an architect, living in New York with her husband Ed. She starts to realize though that an imaginary friend she had as a kid, seems to be back. In fact, her friend always seems to be there, goading her to do and say things she never thought of. We follow Amanda as she starts to realize what is happening to her, and takes actions to stop it.

I thought this was great. Amanda was a gray character to me, there seemed to be something "off" at the beginning and we have her telling us her story. She tries to identify the many ways things went wrong and what she could have done and the story keeps getting more and more grim.

I loved the aspects of the occult, Catholicism, etc. included in the book. I wish that Gran had gone a bit deeper there, but I think in retrospective, if she had, the book would have slowed down too much. The pace was perfect in my eyes. Things go from puzzling, to curious, to tense, and then the tension just builds and builds until the end.

Loved the ending. Wasn't expecting it, and I think I am going to read more of Gran's books in the future.
