Animal by Lisa Taddeo

2.0

another reviewer called this 70% boring and 30% shock value, which was definitely my experience with this book.

the first half of the book is spent building to a climax i quickly stopped caring about. it goes on tangents and repeats itself constantly trying to keep the audience on their toes while giving us nothing of substance, so it just becomes very difficult to get invested.

i liked joan as a narrator but she just felt so cliche to the "sad, edgy twenty/thirty-something female narrator" genre, i couldn't tell if taddeo was beating the dead horse with tropes or if it was supposed to be satirical, and if it's the latter it didn't come through the way it could have.

i have to say, it does make interesting points about girlhood, motherhood and female rage— it has the potential to be such a brilliant book, i just felt it was executed poorly.
