Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson

4.0

Freedom. Freedom, to Wax, wasn't the absence of responsibility. It was being able to do what was right, without having to worry if it was also wrong.

My only complaints are that I need more Steris, Wayne's point of view is still annoying, and I'm not totally sure how to feel about a certain narrative choice/reveal near the end (if you've read the book you know what I mean). However. This was absolutely incredible otherwise, and I'm impressed at how Sanderson managed to turn a lighthearted steampunk mystery into a deep contemplation of free will, ethics, divinity, and organized religion. The warring denominations, the questions about who is truly in control, and the struggle to know if you're acting only because a god has moved you, or because you truly believe it... I was enthralled. And the last line was beautiful.
