The Graveyard Apartment by Mariko Koike
4.0
A young family with past tragedy moves into an upscale apartment building on the edge of terror. Parked conveniently between a temple, crematorium, and giant old-school graveyard, Misao is just another young mom glad to have landed a reasonably priced living space with a decent commute for her husband. But the neighborhood and the building itself are hiding secrets, and soon Misao is fighting for the lives of her family against an unseen horror that appears to be centered on the building's basement storage space. While crucial hints are telegraphed early on in the story, the way it unfolds is still creepy and compelling. Originally published in the 1980s in Japanese, this story seems oddly fresh with its take on how past relationships haunt the present, the interminable search for decent housing in urban marketplaces, and the isolation young mothers feel when they're out of the traditional workforce.
