Shadow of the Batgirl by Sarah Kuhn
4.0
I enjoyed this graphic novel by Sarah Kuhn and Nicole Goux is something special. I love the character of Cassandra Cain, and this story provides a different look into her.
Let’s talk about expectations: if you’re going into this hoping for a story of Cass becoming Batgirl and foiling some villain’s elaborate plan, you’re going to be disappointed. Kuhn and Goux have created a more intimate story about a teenager finding her true identity. Once you realize this book is the latter and not the former, it’s a much more enjoyable read.
The story’s best moments are when Cass starts to open up to Barbara, Jackie, and Erik. The subplot involving Cass’ father is one of the weakest points of the book, and I wish there had been more to it. This book really only focuses on Cass choosing to be a hero and never feels like it delivers on her being the hero.
Overall, it’s a fun book, and it’s worth the read. I’d just recommend tempering expectations for a more traditional superhero story.
