The Boy in the Smoke by Maureen Johnson

5.0

This was such a beautiful and heartbreaking and yet completely satisfying prequel/novella. I'm so glad I was finally able to get my hands on it! I honestly can't even write a proper review because I can't find the words to strong together to give this story enough justice.

If you've read Maureen Johnson's Shades of London series then you're familiar with Stephen (sobbing because while I haven't read the third book yet, I have read the second and I'm literally the Tenth Doctor in the rain gif. Thanks to the mobile app for not allowing me to post proper gifs) then you'll be familiar with Stephen. This is just a simple background story on his character but it's done so well. It talks about his relationship with his parents, with his sister, and how he came to be the Stephen we first met in "The Name of the Star."
