I'll be honest I had forgotten 99% of this series, so unlike Sam I didn't see this as pretty much the same as the second book. I might think differently if I actually remembered more stuff. This is also why I'm glad this book retold things, like about Cain's family.
This is probably the first that I rated a book higher than Sam but I really enjoyed the romance aspect of things. Cain claimed Wynter as his and would never let her go and she didn't even want him to. As someone who loves possessive men in books-- are you even surprised I loved this? Wynter was vital to him, as necessary as breathing. Cain would never give her up and would fight tooth and nail to keep her.
I loved how Cain thought that it was like they were meant to be together. She suited him in every imaginable way and accepted every part of him. It was also sweet how even his monster wanted her. These two had secrets, well mostly Wynter but she clearly loved him and thought that he was central of her life.
I was very proud of Wynter deciding not to give herself up for "good of others" because that's just so dumb and I hate when it's done in other books.
I didn't really care about fantasy stuff in this book. I did find some things interesting but I was mostly there for Wynter and Cain. My biggest problem with the book was how many times our main character got kidnapped. She managed to save herself pretty much always but it became annoying.
The second thing I really didn't enjoy was Wynter's coven. I think they're meant to be quirky and funny but I just was tempted to skim read every time they appeared.
All in all I wasn't that into the plot of this book but I lived for the romance and as the romance is always my favorite part of the book-- The Monsters We Are lived up to my expectations, especially after being disappointed with the second book.
