Quietly Hostile by Samantha Irby

4.0

Samantha Irby continues to be the master of self-deprecating humour and cultural observation. This essay collection hit me right in the feels with “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” and I laughed out loud at listicles like the one of tips for how to make teens think you’re cool.

The only thing I found with this collection is that there were a few more long form pieces that relied on pop culture knowledge I didn’t always have. I enjoyed the long piece on how Irby would’ve re-written various Sex and the City episodes, but as someone who didn’t watch the show, it didn’t 100% land. Same with the article about Dave Matthews songs - hilarious but would’ve been even funnier if I’d known the songs to begin with.
