The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

5.0

The Lovely Bones is tragically beautiful and will have you in absolute floods of tears as well as experiencing so many other emotions. Personally I think this book will be considered a classic in decades to come and for me it will always hold such a special place in my heart. This was a re-read for me and I first read it over 10 years ago and reading it again it made me re-experience everything like it was the very first time. When I first read this book my Dad had not long passed away and I found Sebold's depiction of heaven to be so comforting and beautifully written. Also, she takes you on such a powerful journey of the ups and downs of grief and shows how it spans a life time and is never truly over. Re-reading this did cause to me to pick up on some things that I missed when I was younger such as the racial discrimination by the police shown towards the Singh family during the investigation and as this book is set in the 70's I really believe that Sebold wrote this so well so that it had a sense of authenticity but I'll let you read all that yourself. Overall I will never stop recommending this book for people to read, I love it. And I know that sounds strange considering the tragic and graphic rape and murder scene but when you look at this read as a whole it is so tragically beautiful that I don't think anyone couldn't love it. TW: contains rape and murder scene as well as mentions of other murders including children.
