This book wants to use the fact that you know exactly how a world like this should be built to jump straight into the action - which I appreciate - but doesn't quite land it. Every so often we'd get a 2-3 sentence run of brilliance but it's wrapped in a world and plot that lacks depth and sophistication for me.
This is possibly exacerbated by me having just read Delany who would do So Much Better with this concept, but it feels something of a let down given the synopsis. A real Indiana Jones 2 of a whodunnit. Bang it out in an afternoon and feel, yknow, fine. A 3 in the same way a meal deal sandwich is.
