In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire
5.0
The latest entry in Seanan Mcguire’s Wayward Children series, In An Absent Dream, is probably her best yet! I read it in a day! This series continually captures my heart with its amazing stories, its atmospheric world building and it’s diverse characters! I love continually coming back to this world, where children climb into wardrobes, or open wooden doors set in ancient trees and escape to magical worlds.
This latest entry follows the character of Lundy. Lundy is a bookish girl, who always follows the rules, never does anything unexpected, and has dreams of settling down and becoming a librarian. Until one day on her way home from school she stumbles onto an ancient tree into which is carved quiet a peculiar and ornate looking door and two words BE SURE. Not really understanding or thinking to much of them, Lundy steps through the door into a magical world. She encounters a girl named Moon with owlish eyes, a librarian, and a place called the goblin market. In this enchanting world of the goblin market, she finds a strange and wonderfully adventures place filled with all manner of creatures and things. She also discovers that this place, she has stumbled into, has many rules of its own that will land her in greater trouble than she can imagine if she disobeys them. As the book progresses, she must make a choice between staying with those she loves or disobeying the rules.
The character of Lundy is the epidemy of who I want to be in so many ways. I so enjoyed and related with her affinity for books and story, her sense of adventure, her strength in times of hardship, and her unrelenting love for those she holds dear. She is a truly memorable character I will never forget. Filled with stunning imagery, lyrical language, and strong female characters, this story captures my heart in every way. Please pre order today if you haven’t. Thank you to Tor and Macmillan publishing for my copy of the ARC of this wonderful tale!
