Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
5.0
What can I say that hasn’t already been said about Anne Rice? Did you know her husband was named Stan Rice? I didn’t. Did you know her first name was Howard? Now you do. Read this in high school, recently bookclubbed it with a few friends. We all admitted we hadn’t realized just how philosophical and profound “Interview” truly is, especially being Rice’s first novel. Considering the time it was written and published, the subversive concepts within are what really sets Rice apart and secured her spot in the canon of vamp-lit. Perhaps one of the most quintessential gothic vampire stories of all time, Rice delivers an erotic, darkly evocative narrative teeming with examinations of gender, class, sexuality, and immortality itself. It’s long, it’s dense, and Anne Rice is still hailed as one of the greatest vampire novelists for a reason. Also, it’s gaaaaaaay. And there’s yeeaarrning. And gay yearning, which is worse.
Does drag on a bit though, right? Though, if I were a sexy gay vampire dealing with ~*despair*~ in the 1800’s, I’d have a lot to say too.
4.5/5 No one but Anne Rice can make the description of a man basically shitting himself all over New Orleans beautiful and timeless.
