The Chain by Adrian McKinty

4.0

“It’s the most evil thing you can do, but it has to be done.”

Cat and mouse except the cat is an indoor pet experiencing their front yard for the first time and the mouse has a gun. I guess who was who in that comparison bounced back and forth depending on where you were at in the book, which kept things interesting. I’m always a fan of the “readers know more than the characters” plot choice and in “The Chain” it became nerve wracking, especially after the complete left turn of the Part Two. Creating good bad characters is a special talent especially when after finishing the book, I admit, I wanted a little more time with the antagonists.

The dialogue was not what I would call a “star player” of this novel. If I was having a conversation with someone and it was going like many of the little chats in this book, I would simply never talk to them again. Also, there’s some real big brain shit in here and it got pretentious AF. Like, you’re kidnapping a child and quoting Sartre (or whoever)???? Get real!

3.5/5 I’m sorry but, “Is that a pistol in your pocket or are you just—oh, it is a pistol,” was so funny.
