Case File Compendium: Bing an Ben (Novel) Vol. 2 by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou
5.0
Absolutely insane, 5/5 stars. I never doubted you, Meatbun! It was a massive improvement from volume 1. THIS is exactly what I expected when getting into BAB, she really delivered what promised. I'm so freaking happy that I enjoyed it this much. I knew it'd get better but I wasn't expecting it to happen until vol 3, so it's a nice surprise.
This volume focuses fully on the MCs as it should be. Introductions are over and plot starts moving, while the relationship between He Yu and Xie Qingcheng gets more intense. There are some huge reveals that change their dynamic for the worst. Another thing is that the writting flows better this time. Perhaps it was the translation, or Meatbun herself, but I'm very pleased.
I absolutely adore how Meatbun handles the revealing of secrets and the truth behind mistrunderstandings. She's a master at that. Here, it helped to give more sense on He Yu's feelings towards Xie Xue, Xie Qingcheng's sister. There's a moment where the reader sees the implication behind Xie Qingcheng leaving and He Yu's behaviour around him. That, combined with the scene where He Yu breaks down at the realization, were very well done.
I have to mention how masterfully Meatbun wrote the moments leading up to the explosion betweeen the two men. I wasn't expected it to happen to that magnitude this soon. There were many times where my jaw dropped during the smut scene. I loved the dirty talk, the humilliation, and the amount of conflicting feelings from both sides. The touch of the aphrodisiac... Oh Meatbun, I get you so much. This also mirrors that scene from 2ha with Chu-fei being dosed. She gets really freaky this time with the sex this time and it's delicious.
About the characters, curiously this made me feel affection for He Yu despite of his actions. I also sympathized with Xie Qingcheng even if he made mistakes in the past. Yes, both aren't the greatest people and the homophobia/sexism is still present, but I understand it's part of the process, plus it was more bearable compared to volume 1. I feel like HeXie will end up becoming one of my favorite couples of all time.
