Wicked Scandal by Rachel Leigh
5.0
Hot off the heels of the excellent Heartless Monster, Wicked Scandal is most certainly a gorgeous entry in the Misfits series. I was enthralled and captivated; when my heart wasn't crying out over the angst, it was swooning in delight over the romance. I simply could not put this one down-- I loved it. 4.5✨
This book is led by fantastic pair: Catherine and Wilder. Catherine's arc begins in heartbreak, I felt so deeply for her. The author takes great care in how she explores the harrowing experiences Catherine deals with daily in her home. Seeing her start to fight back for herself and for her blossoming love was empowering. Wilder is a terrific hero and complement to Catehrine-- he is the first to truly see her, to break down those walls and reach out with a hand to lead her somewhere better. I appreciated how, given the age gap, how high his emotional intelligence was and how it led to a beautiful bond with Catherine.
There is a reverse age gap, which I always appreciate-- that said, I admit it took me a bit to feel fully at ease with it-- Wilder is 18 to Catherine's 29. Whilst I would have preferred them a bit closer in age, this was only a personal nitpick for me to sort out, nothing at all affecting my enjoyment. Sometimes we have to suspend the disbelief and embrace the journey-- and I am so glad I did. I was ultimately for the taboo! There's taboo is both in the age gap and the fact our heroine is a married woman.
From the onset we know Catherine's marriage is more than simply unhappy-- it's a trap. She is abused, dehumanized, and feeling she has no choice but to stay shackled to her husband. I had zero qualms in immediately rooting for her and Wilder to find a happily ever after in such dire circumstances. I believed in more than just their electrifying chemistry-- I believed in their emotional connection. You want to see this couple succeed in every single way.
I found the development of their relationship wholly tantalizing, the backbone of this amazing story.
The climax had me howling when I realized I guessed right about what really happened upon its development. The narrative does an incredible job in laying out the hints without it being placed in the foreground, so either you’ll catch it or you’ll be gasping in shock and awe...but as you turn around you'll realize the breadcrumbs were always leading to its revelation.
I really appreciate when a book properly foreshadows things like this, without subverting expectations or coming out of left field. It’s subtly, but ever so properly built up.
I care deeply for our leads that I must admit the resolution had me sweating things, from the legal standpoint, haha! That's all I'll say! It was a wild ride!
These first two entries of the Misfits have propelled this ongoing series towards the top of my favorites list. I am so glad to have read this, and I'm so ready for the next one!
