Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal

I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was an enthusiastic recommendation from a book club member.
This was both the best and worst pick to read around major surgery. The short story nature meant I could pick it up, read a chapter, and it was OK if I'd forgotten some details before the next story. But the stories are also wonderfully interwoven, and I missed some of that richness because I wasn't quite with it. Food plays an important role in every story and in many of the central characters, and I really enjoyed that throughline.
