Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco

4.0

**4.5 star review**

Capturing the Devil is the conclusion to the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. Audrey Rose, Thomas, Liza, and Uncle have all made it to Chicago, after having solved the mayhem aboard the RMS Etruria. On top of the murders that have called them here, Thomas and Audrey Rose must face another demon... Telling Audrey Rose's father that Thomas intends to marry Audrey Rose. Not only do the murders lead them deeper into the past of Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose and Thomas' lives get turned upside down by unexpected forces. Can they stay together against all the odds, or will society and this serial killer pull them apart?

Capturing the Devil was definitely worth the listen! I was sad to say that I had a hard time making it through Escaping from Houdini, since I believed that was going to be my favorite just based off of the synopsis. I was a little nervous that Capturing the Devil would follow Escaping from Houdini and leave me wanting more, but it was a very satisfying ending to the series. The inclusion of the more intimate parts of Audrey Rose's life throughout the series is honestly why I won't be giving this 5 stars. That may sound really impersonal like I don't care about her life, but Stalking Jack the Ripper was all action and all about the murders, and I think that's what drew me in so much. The fact that most of the story was about the possibility of a wedding and trying to get both families to cooperate was less thrilling for me, and kind of made some of the material dry. If the whole series had been more invested in the other workings of Audrey Rose's life, I may not have felt this way. But it felt a little like as the series went on it got to be more about her inner battles than the ones she faced in society for being a female forensics investigator. I thought her character became a little soft and that she cared more about society than she originally had expressed.

The series as a whole made me happy because I learned about some true crime cases that I didn't know a lot about, especially The Devil in the White City. I do love the era this series takes place in, don't get me wrong, but I just wanted more of Audrey Rose kind of telling society to go screw itself and she was going to do what made her happy. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves true crime since it's a really interesting take on some really infamous cases.
