Marie Antoinette, Phantom Queen by Annie Goetzinger, Rodolphe
3.0
Marie Antoinette: Phantom Queen is a straightforward and pretty predictable ghost story that revolves around Maud, a recently-widowed artist in the 1930s, who channels the ghost of Marie Antoinette and has to help her find her final resting place. I liked the concept but just felt like I needed more. For one thing, I never really feel like I got to know who Maud was and why she felt a kinship with Marie Antoinette. There was also a great opportunity to myth-bust a bit more about Marie Antoinette and integrate more historical facts, but the writers chose to keep that very light and focus instead on the ghost-ness of it all. Still, Annie Goetzinger's art is incredible, conveying the ornate rooms and costumes of Versailles and the styles of the 1930s, and building an ethereal, eerie atmosphere. That makes this book worth the read and I can see it being a fun graphic novel for teens.
