The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin

5.0

Loved it yet again, read as part of this edition of the collection of the Earthsea book. Despite preferring Wizard as a story I am looking forward to seeing Tenar again more then Ged.

I loved seeing the world from what in other books would just be the "bad guys" perspective, and seeing how a person could be completely indoctrinated into a religion like this was fascinating. Tenars slow slips into the use of terms the priestesses use, coming to call herself Arha and refer to her past lives was really well done, as well as her slips and eventual elation as she questions her life and then rejects it.

I was a bit worried when a man came along that it would turn her story into a damsel rescue, but she truly had power in this place and it genuinely wasn't until they worked together that they could both escape. I loved that the ultimate decision was hers. I will say the immediate aftermath of the escape did feel quite out of nowhere and didn't really seem to serve much point.
